Long Time No...

Hidie all, been lurking but uninspired. Remember Marietta's eggplants? Here's the After photo:

Anyone want to move to beautiful Cambridge, Massachusetts? I know this great place. Here's the scoop:

Mom had her last treatment Monday, for two weeks anyway. Fingers crossed, everyone, thanks.

The tyranny of the harvest is upon us. I'm cooking and freezing, cooking and freezing. Turning the pumpkins so they'll be tanned and shapely. Hanging bunches of herbs in the breezeway to dry. Soon, the neighbors will find canoe-sized zucchinis on their porches when they go out to get the morning paper.

And I have work. It keeps coming in; I'm employed at least halfway through October. I've paid the Feds. Vermont must wait a few more paychecks. Then I can buy fuel for the winter. And then maybe I'll send Calamity her patterns, which have been sitting on our table for months now.

Summer, over the top

So we're in the breezeway shucking corn. A breezeway is kind of a New England winter air-lock: the continuous architecture feature that connects the unheated barn or woodshed or garage to the mudroom (the final lock before you get into the house, where you shed your muddy boots) and keeps you from being lost in the blizzard when you go to get an armload of wood. Ours doubles as a porch during bug season, which thankfully has just ended. So, we're shucking corn and admiring Great-Uncle George's daylilies, which Dad has been mowing down every year before they bloomed. This year has been so wet that haying got severely delayed, and the lilies bloomed so I was able to find them in the 6-foot-tall grass and dig them up. Now I have 6 washtubs full of daylilies and noplace to put them because I was racing the tractor and didn't have time to make beds beforehand. But I will this week.

SO we're shucking corn, and I step outside to throw the husks on the weed pile, and there's this CLOUD. Maxfield Parrish lived and painted some 70 miles from here. This cloud apparently was looking for his studio and took a wrong turn at Woodstock.

A Visit

My friend Marietta came to visit. She brought us eggplants.

We hiked up a nearby mountain.

Dame's rocket and goldenrod were blooming in the open spaces.

In the woods, we found ghost flowers

and poison berries.

A horse is a horse.

Ollie and I spent the day cleaning out stables.
The fruits of our labours-Bags and bags of poo for the garden.

Thanks horses!
