Summer's Here

Scapes and grapes.

Leaves, leaves, leaves!!

The compost bin... and one of its inhabitants.

The lavender's blooming too, the first time since we planted it 4 years ago. It's really too cold for it here. Or always has been...

I think he is great.

Todays wonderful op shop find.

Im just thrilled to have found this wonderful tiny Anson Bros. album.there are about 50 images on tin about the size of my thumb nail in it . The quality is incredible as you can see from the image of the beautiful young man(remember my scanner isn't great)Still the hand colored images are so fresh. They would have been taken between 1870 and 1880.

From the gem album.

One thing about me

One's all I can manage just now; I'm in deadline hell. Hope that's OK till I can pony up more?

My first romantic/sexual stirrings were for a cartoon character. He had no name; he was just some blond profile in a comic book. I tore his face out of the comic and slept with him under my pillow. Looking at him made me feel funny in a good way. I might have been 12 at the time.

Later, I had a brief comix career and even got published a couple of times.

Might have been 30 years later, I met this fella at a party. I'd met him before and thought he was too old for me (he's four years younger). He was just back from Germany. I said something about comix and he said "I HATE comix" and I knew he didn't. I also knew something was weird, because I'd always abhorred hairy men, and his furry knuckles were causing me lust.

So I married him. He makes me feel funny in a good way.

I tried to post this here, but somehow I've lost the magic. She hasn't.

20 years on...

Pin cushion hakea

Pin cushion hakea, originally uploaded by calamitysue.

Ive just had a couple of days with my dear friend at her newly completed shack(on a small island not far from Cygnet) .Perfect cold ,still and sunny winters days for long walks on the beach.Lots of magnificent food and lots of garden planning.Ive been trying to talk her into planting 3 different varieties of this Hakea , luckily one was flowering magnificently next door, proof that they do really well there and convincing Annie that 3 may not be enough.

ME,Me, Me,Me,Me,Me,Me.Me,Me,Me.

Oh lordy,Ive been tagged by a woman who I admire and would rather like to impress .10 things about me.Im no writer Amy.Be brave now Sue,here you go.

1I had a 70s childhood-My Dad used to buy and do up lovely cars but we had no money at all. This was ok ,it taught me to be resourceful-to Op shop(our word for thrift shopping).I have rarely ever bought anything new-I even make my own knickers.
2.As a child I refused to have anything to do with other children.I spent my time alone or with my adopted grandfather,he was a very kind and eccentric Scotsman who taught me about gardening and ancient history.
3.When I was 10 I refused to do anything at school because I detested my teacher-the head of the school let me sit in the high school library for the entire school year. The first two books I read were Wuthering Heights and Christiane F.(Oh dear)

3.When I was 14 I embraced music.Punk, Goth.I couldn't wait to get out of my small home town and do all that rock and roll lifestyle stuff. I went to Art school.I was a barmaid.I saw thousands of bands.I had a lot of fun

3.When I was 29 I backpacked all over the world(saw a lot more bands) and decided to return to Tasmania and live in the country(this was one of the best decisions of my life.)
4.I failed to have an Art career because I have no ambition at all (loads of talent of course).
5.When I get really drunk I have to listen to"The Ace of Spades ".
6.For years I collected Catholic kitsch despite a complete lack of faith in anything. Now I think it was some kind of fetish caused by my mothers lurid descriptions of her Catholic upbringing.

7.I can't drive a car.
8.I always need to have something to do with my hands.Knitting,sewing,spinning,carving.This apron is the last thing I finished.

9.I love growing food and I love cooking. My partner and I are almost self sufficient and what food we can't grow we barter for with produce from our garden.
10.This is my friend ,partner and love of my life.

Fox-a-leekie

Bad dog! Bad!! BAD!!!

Yes, those sad little sprouts are what's left of the leeks. The kits are becoming quite bold; they were playing on the driveway this morning, and one got into in my herb bed, which is snug up against the house. We're torn between amusement at their antics and a growing sense of disposession.

Crepuscular

Foxes are crepuscular: they're most active at dawn and dusk. When I got up this morning, they were tussling and rolling in the leek bed. Mr. Sorrow will be crushed. Like the leeks.
