The Cruellest Month

Two weeks ago, my flowers looked like this.

Then we had a storm. It knocked down a bunch of big trees; the local town was declared a disaster area, and we were without power (and heat) for 5 days.

We were luckier than many people, who lost sheds, cars, and roofs in addition to power; nothing fell on our house except snow and the buckets of rain that ended the storm.

Maybe Spring's really here now.

Wow-it must be scary when the power goes off and the snow is building up like that. Worse when the roof falls in. Then that change ,how do tiny plants like those beautiful crocus do it? Incredible to see those shots.

I actually don't mind when the power fails. We keep a pile of candles and light them as soon as the lights go. Without heat, though, it's tedious and depressing. One more year and we'll have backup heat too. (We bought a woodstove last year but never got it installed -- that's the expensive part!) Our water is gravity-fed, but my folks depend on an electric pump. They had heat, but no water. So we hauled water to their house. The hardest part was finding a place to plug in the laptop so I could keep working!

We'll probably get snow again before June, but with luck no more monster storms.
