Ja, fuck Disney and Hanna Barbera -- the Fleischer Brothers were IT. JW's color stuff is gorgeous, but on balance I think I prefer his black & white.
Somewhere in all of my piles of crap I have a photocopied "magazine" that he was putting out in the early 80's called -- what else -- Jim. It's mostly typewritten ramblings, but the odd sketch too. He hadn't yet developed his draftsmanship to its current godllike perfection.

The more I see him, the more I love him. Not all his stuff is influenced by Max Fleischer (Betty Boop, Popeye, Koko), but my favorite stuff is.
