Happiness is a box of fresh Herbs
I've been having a terrible fly problem this summer (not sure why) but I read somewhere that flies don't like the oder of fresh growing basil so I went out to my favorite nursery and bought several different varieties of basil, one oregano, and one small cilantro. Because I don't have a huge space to have a garden, all of my plants are in containers.
Has any one else heard that basil deters flies? And if not, what other home remedies can anyone think of?

No, but I hope it's true! We're in the depths of blackfly season right now and I'm covered with seeping welts and excoriated buboes and won't go outdoors without my DEET. Which I hate to use, and so I don't go out.
But enough of my sorrows. The point is, I have 2 Thai basils, 2 purple ruffles, and one little-leaf (which I don't actually like and bought whilst in an herb frenzy). They're still little, because it's been raining for two months and they're suffering. But it's finally drying up, and they may yet get the Mediterranean days they need to prosper. So I hope you heard right! Let us know how it works.
Meantime, I'm going to get some chem-lab strength hydrogen peroxide and spray it around (sensibly diluted, of course). It's supposed to be some sort of garden panacea: kills bugs, funguses, god knows what all else AND it breaks down quickly and harmlessly, leaving just an oxygen remnant that's actually good for the plants.
Y'all know what we white trashies do? Hang zip-lock baggies full of water. That's right. Fill it up about a third of the way and hang it in the area you want to stay bug free. I don't know why it works but it does. I can't bring myself to do it at home, but I have a friend who swears by it. You can imagine the aesthetic impact.
I don't think we have those blackflies ,they bite you not the plants ,right? The herbs look beautiful Dee-it makes me long for spring,my garden is so empty and bleak at the moment.
Lrts know how the peroxide goes C,I had some fungus woes last year.
